We are all very familiar with embroidery, possibly because we heard our mothers or grand mothers speak about, because prior to the present century, many of our garments and tapestries were hand embroidered. Gilhooley Family Crest | Gilhooley Family History

The Gilhooley family name is of Irish origin and is an angliciized form of MacGiolla Ghuala a sept which came from Connaught. A sept or clan is a collective term describing a group of persons whose immediate ancestors bore a common surname and inhabited the same territory.

The Gilhooley clan or sept have been prominent in Leitrim and Roscommon since records began and also here that we find the family name Gilhooley in the Four Masters in the year of 1243 this is saying that the clan is perhaps an offshoot of the O'Mulvey sept.

Three parish priests of the family name were recorded in Kiltoghert, County Leitrim between the years 1461 and 1505. Because of migration the name is seldom found outside of Connaught but a branch was actually established at Ballynagally in County Limerick which is also on the West Coat of Ireland, this was established in the 18th century.
